Test Drive Meme 5.

We light our lamps, and forth we go!
An early blight if that love be true,
A broken heart if that love be hollow!
Merrily O! Merrily O!
Wailing and woe to the fools who follow!

Prompt 1:

t’s a normal day in the Town – a little chilly, but otherwise sunny and relatively pleasant –which is what makes it all the more offensive that it’s once again up to no good.

This time?

It happens when you eat.

Eating anything red will cause you to grow – the more you eat, the more you grow. If you’re not careful, you could become absolutely massive. Eating anything blue will cause you to shrink – the more you eat, the more, again, you shrink. Don’t worry, though. Eating yellow foods will turn you back to normal.

Oh…and remember that foods aren’t always the colors you’re used to them being here.

Prompt 2:

t’s a good thing you’ve adjusted to the Town a bit! You’re probably wearing some of the classic peasant fashion that can be found and scavenged in the Town, whether for warmth or to give your poor regular clothes a break or because they’re covered in the blood of fairies… either way, here you are in some colorless, hideous grey peasant clothing of various types.

Which is why it’s all the worse when it suddenly has color again. Maybe it’s bright orange. Maybe it’s puce colored. Maybe it’s a horrifying mix of pink and purple. Either way, there’s no chance any of what you’re wearing matches.

You can definitely thank someone in the Town for this one.

Prompt 3:

he quest sits proudly and simple on the quest post on the forum. It seems simple, too:

Quest 63
Retrieve a pair of fairy wings.
Requirements: Any two colors.

Surely you can manage that much! So off into the woods you go to find some fairies. Of course, they’re mean, nasty little buggers, full of various types of magic and tricks up their little fairy sleeves, so they won’t exactly be easy to take care of. But you finally manage. You’re victorious, and proudly have a defeated fairy in your hands.

… Yeah, of course you have to rip the wings off yourself if you want to bring them back. Anything less just won’t do. Gross.

This quest was way more trouble than it was worth.

Prompt 4:

he woods looms ominously over the Town pretty constantly… and that’s just something you have to get used to. But then, from the depths of the woods, in the darkness under the tree branches, there’s…a light. It’s a small, flickering light, as if from a lantern in the distance.

You…should go see what it is, right? There’s a strong, strong urge to do so. Maybe you think someone out there needs help. Maybe you think the person there has answers, or knows a way out.

Either way…the will-o-wisps will try to lure you deeply into the woods. Deeper, and deeper and deeper… until you slam right on into one of those golems, or banshees or hydras or many others. You can thank your fellow townspeople for their existence out there – but either way, they’re nasty and mean. Hopefully someone saw you wandering in there and followed to give you a hand, because chances are, you’ll need it.

[ Whew that crack is pretty huge. Honestly, it's kind of incredible to watch; the hydra wails a bit as the crack spreads in a spiderweb pattern, to which Magilou can only stop and stare.

Before she would have just run away and screeched about something cursed or whatever, but this? Now she has to stick around to see what's going to happen next. Not that she's interested or anything--she's not interested in very much at all, really--but it's killing an afternoon. And a hydra, by the by.

Hearing that Jeanne believes in her innocence is pretty amusing. It brings a small, wicked grin to her face, dashed not a moment later by the hydra's warning cries once again. ]

Oh, I don't seem wicked to you? I'll have to work on my image. Witches shouldn't project a veneer of innocence. We're a curious bunch made in the shadows.

...Of course, it'd be easier to explain if my dear familiar hadn't betrayed me again. But as it is, I'm your majestic moral support. [ So good luck with that! ]

[ She focuses on defeating the hydra, shattering one head at time. She hopes it's not like the myths and that it'll regenerate a head. She is not one whose specialty lies in great offensive powers.

She speaks once it doesn't look like its heads will come back. ]

Even if you say you shouldn't be innocent, it does not mean you can't be. Would someone so wicked and sunken in shadows stay to be moral support? I am not one to judge someone simply because someone said that is how it should be.

[ If she sat back and did as people said that's how it should be, she wouldn't have left her home at the age of 17. Crystal heads fall and shatter on the ground.

Whether or not Magilous is innocent is not the issue. It is that she has not done anything that Jeanne feels must be stopped. People full of darkness and rage can ask for forgiveness or salvation. The wicked can ask for help. There is nothing wrong in that. ]

You're the real deal, huh? You're really making it hard to build my reputation!

[ A long time ago, perhaps, she would have believed in the inherent value of acting on good will, but "good will" isn't something she has much faith in any longer. She's not used to being in the presence of someone who thinks she could be a good person!! Jeanne saying she'll judge people on her own merits, rather than sit back and accept the common opinion of authority is something Magilou can actually respect. Living undaunted by what the world might throw in her way, rather than sit back and take the hits... At the very least, she's curious as to where this could go.

The odd hydra heads start to splinter, scattering on the ground like glass. Magilou crouches to pick up one of the shards. It's clear crystal all the way through. Hmm. It doesn't look like it's trying to reform, at least. ]

"Moral support" was just a magnanimous way of saying I didn't feel like helping, you know. I'm still a witch, for whom the world is but a plaything! If that doesn't cast a shadow, what else does?

[ Sometimes, you go to war for your beliefs. Other times, you get burned at the stake for them. Both times, Jeanne persisted. She accepted the common opinion of the authority, but she did not judge them unfairly for it. She was evil in their eyes, and so she burned. That was her fate. ]

Are shadows inherently evil? Can light be known without darkness? I believe that people have innate goodness. What they do with their life and their actions are their choices, but I cannot condemn them for simply being born. If how you play with the world brings harm to others, then I will consider your actions and move to stop you if I must.

[ Just as she stops the hydra finally. It falls into pieces under the brunt of her repeated strikes. ]

I came to help you.

[ Magilou helping was never expected. It would have only been a pleasant occurrence if she did. ]
witchual: (not that i much care how it turns out.)

"Humans are the wellspring of malevolence." [ The words roll off emotionlessly, as if reciting an old and decayed maxim. The ever-present smile on her face dims. ] That's a saying I heard a long time ago. I'm inclined to think that your "innate goodness" schtick would make some folks I used to know real angry. Not that I really care what someone decides on--dark or light, life's like one long quiz show.

But hey, believe what you want. Believing belies a strong will, and a strong will is proof you're alive, right?

[ If persistence is the name of the game, Magilou's nothing if not stubborn. Not in the ways that others wished for her to be, but in all aspects of her life, she's kept going, even subconsciously. Humanity, as a collective, might have lost the veneer of innocence, but it's the freedom of choice that makes them human. Perhaps there is some goodness there. There's more gray in that spectrum than she's been raised to believe.

The hydra falls with an earth-shuddering crash, what's left of its remains shattering. Amid the din, Magilou shrugs, brushing the rest of Jeanne's cutting questions away. ]

And lo, the taste of witch meat remains but a distant dream to my pursuers, for the dashing knight has slain the beast! Thanks to my unending moral support, I'm sure. Go, team! [ She means "thanks for helping me". She'll even give a round of applause! ] Have you fought any other monsters like that thing?

If your will is to live, there is nothing wrong in that. The people you used to know may be angry. I would still argue it. It is the potential of humans to be either good or evil that is awe-inspiring. Yes, there are untold levels of malevolence that exists. There is no hiding how terrible people can be, but there are also so many who do good—so many who strive to do more. I would fight for their futures no matter how much it takes.

[ She is only alive now as a transient being, but she would die for humanity's potential without looking back, and she would not regret it. She may be naive in some aspects of living, but Jeanne d'Arc knew where her road led and where it would end. Her belief has led her to give up her life more than once.

When it's certain the hydra won't regenerate, her flag dematerializes in a flash of magical sparkles, and her expression gentles. ]

I would not call myself a knight, but I am glad to be of help and for whatever support you gave. [ She's sincere. ] I've fought similar beasts but nothing exactly like that one before. It became almost a normal occurrence at one time.

[ A warrior who fights beasts on the regular and yet still believes in the goodness of the world? What a strange place this is. There’s a sincerity in those words that Magilou can’t quite match—a strong will, a burning flame of passion. Jeanne speaks as if she’d seen the dark side of humanity and still believed in the benevolent parts.

And honestly? Magilou can respect that, in some small, deeply hidden part of her. Trusting in the choices of people is a lot better than stripping away will in the name of “reason”. Her cynicism is still forefront, but she’s working on it. The bitter edges have been sanded down somewhat. ]

I suppose weeds can pop up in every garden. And bugs choose to bite whomever they please. I wouldn’t call either awe-inspiring, but it’s a lot better than mindless drones ripped of their will to choose. There’s no beauty in a garden of weeds, or a bed of fake flowers.

[ Heh, look at her. Waxing poetic with the remnants of a messed up hydra at her feet. At least it’s not the blood and guts of a real one? She pockets the shard she picked up earlier. Who knows if it’ll try and reform later, but that’s a problem for future Magilou. ]

But anyway. Shame that these crystal beasts are a unique thing here, huh? I bet the blood of your regular ol' monsters is a pain to wash clean in that uniform. Especially if you were fighting off a veritable hoard of beasts! To imagine the laundry expenses makes me shiver in fear!
